Meet Teresa
Hello, I’m Teresa, the educator behind Reading Bug Tutoring, and I’m passionate about helping kids feel confident and joyful about reading. My passion for teaching started at the age of nine years old when I taught my three year old sister each day after school! My teaching career has spanned 28 years. My professional degrees include a Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction from The Pennsylvania State University, a Bachelor's Degree in Education from The University of Michigan and a 316 Wisconsin Licensing Degree from Edgewood College. I am a licensed Wisconsin educator, grades K-6 and hold a Wisconsin 316 Reading Teacher License.
The focus of my teaching career for the past fifteen years has been on teaching striving readers and writers. I am a certified IMSLEC dyslexia tutor, receiving my training at the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Madison. I was a reading interventionist at Van Hise Elementary in the Madison Metropolitan School District for eleven years. In June of 2022 I left this teaching position to launch a private literacy tutoring business because, in my experience, one-on-one tutoring is extremely effective for striving readers and writers. Tutoring enables me to focus specifically on developing a student's skills without distractions. One-on-one instruction also provides an opportunity for students to learn at their own pace without feeling self-conscious in front of their peers.

Ongoing Success
Teresa begins with a warm conversation to understand your child's unique needs and literacy goals.
The first two tutoring sessions focus on assessing your child's reading and writing skills in order to get to know your child as a reader and writer and target instruction. Assessment data is shared with parents.
Based on assessment data, Teresa selects a research based program that would be the best fit for your child's instruction.
Engaging lessons and regular updates keep you informed and confident in your child's success.
The Reading Bug Tutoring Literacy Toolkit
Carefully selected evidence-based resources and multisensory materials are used to support each child’s unique journey to reading and spelling mastery.
Curriculum
Teresa utilizes Sonday and UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) for instruction. Both curricula are research-based, evidence-driven interventions rooted in the Science of Reading. Sonday is built upon the Orton-Gillingham method, while UFLI provides a strong focus on phonemic awareness. Together, these programs offer the systematic, explicit, cumulative, and multisensory instruction that striving readers and writers need to thrive.
Hands-on Tools
Multisensory materials like sand trays, gel pads, dry erase board and magnetic letters are used to engage sight, sound, and touch.
Decodable Books
Stories designed to reinforce specific phonics patterns taught are read by students to build reading fluency and confidence through success.
Engaging Games
Phonics-based games are integrated into lessons to make learning to decode fun and to encourage automaticity in early readers and writers.
"We feel so fortunate Teresa was able to accept our daughter as a student. Our daughter was a capable reader but lacked confidence. Teresa changed that. She now reads with intention, attention to syntax, and last of all, enthusiasm. Giving a child the gift of reading is the best present ever! Teresa's one-on-one attention with our daughter has undoubtedly changed her life!"
Jen, parent of a third grader.
"Working one-on-one with Teresa has really helped our son. His reading skills have progressed, allowing him to take on more complex texts. His spelling and writing have greatly improved and we can tell that he feels much more confident about writing. When we started this parnership, composing a paragraph was a huge challenge, with many words barely recognizable. Now he can write a paragraph in a few minutes and little editing is required. We're so glad that we found Reading Bug Tutoring!"
Megan, parent of a fifth grader.
"Reading Bug Tutoring has been a game changer for our daughter's reading journey. Teresa's tailored approach has not only helped to improve her reading skills, but also instilled a newfound love for reading. We are so grateful for the progress our daughter has made, and her improved confidence is truly inspiring.
Thank you, Reading Bug Tutoring!"
Alan, parent of a fourth grader.

"Teresa is such a good teacher! She taught me stuff that even my parents never learned in school to help me with my reading and writing. Her tutoring classes were fun and taught me so much! Teresa is also very nice and I loved to see her every week!"
Milana, sixth grade student
"We are having a wonderful experience with Reading Bug Tutoring and Teresa. She has the perfect balance of being warm and encouraging while also providing clear structure and evidence-based reading instruction. Our son genuinely loves going to tutoring each week! Finding her has been such a relief. We especially appreciate the regular updates on his progress and always feel informed and supported as parents. One moment that really stood out to us was when our son had to miss his session before the holiday break. Teresa took the time to drop off a winter reading game and a small gift for him. That simple gesture meant so much to our son and showed us how personally invested she is in his success. I trust Teresa completely. It’s clear that this work is not just a job for her, but a true calling and passion."
Kira, parent of a second grader.
"We are SO LUCKY to have found Teresa! I don't know what we would have done without her! Our daughter needed help with reading and writing as a result of a speech and language disability she was diagnosed with when she was younger. Teresa was able to teach our daughter new concepts and helped her find the missing pieces she needed to become a strong and fluent reader! Our daughter grew in her reading, writing, and spelling skills so much during her time tutoring with Teresa. We are forever grateful we found her! She is not only a knowledgeable professional that helped our daughter succeed, she is also an amazing person! Teresa really took the time to personalize her tutoring for our daughter and to explain things to us, as parents! I knew she truly cared about our daughter as both a student and a person."
Sarah & Ryan, parents of a sixth grader.
Becky, parent of a sixth grader.
"We are thrilled to have found Reading Bug Tutoring! Teresa evaluated our daughter's reading skills and identified what skills she was missing. Teresa uses a curriculum that teaches and then reinforces the skills taught. Her methods of instruction are exactly what our daughter needs to become a more successful reader. She has shown great progress! After each session, Teresa has our daughter explain what she has learned and gives suggestions of how we can support her at home. Teresa is kind, understanding, and flexible. I highly recommend Reading Bug Tutoring services!"
"We are so grateful for the impact Teresa has had on our girls. When they started, reading felt challenging and intimidating. Teresa's encouragement, structure and belief in their abilities shifted their confidence after the first session. The sessions have really helped to change how they see themselves as learners and given them the confidence to raise their hands in class, try new things, and put themselves out there in a way they haven't before. We can't thank Teresa enough."
Amy, parent of a second and fifth grader.
